Elgin Motors / Bay Lincoln Mercury

Elgin Ford-Monarch opened in 1947 and was originally located at 123 Front St, Toronto ON.

In 1954, the dealership outgrew their location and moved to 636 Bay St.

In 1961, Elgin Ford outgrew their old location again and at a cost of $2.1m, they opened another showroom at 655 Bay St.

In the 1960s, they sold numerous high performance Fords, including Boss 429s, 427 side oiler powered Ford, and Cobra Jet Fords.

In 1979, the dealership was sold to Peter Pocklington. In 1983, Elgin Ford went into receivership when Pocklington filed for bankruptcy. Ford Motor Co of Canada did not want to lose the prime location in downtown so it purchased the assets of Elgin.

John Aerssen, the general manager at the time, would become Elgin’s successor’s owner. In 1984, Elgin Ford-Lincoln became Bay Lincoln-Mercury and moved to 650 Bay St.

When their building burned down, they moved to 350 Eastern Ave.

In the early 90s, the dealership moved to 36 Yorkville Ave and took over the former Mercedes-Benz flagship location. In 2001, the dealership became Bay Ford-Lincoln and in 2006 the dealership closed.

Does anyone have a photo of Bay Lincoln-Mercury at this address?
